  Critical Power Solution Case Study

Alfred I. DuPont Children's Hospital Power System Wilmington, Delaware:

Requirements:

3,000 KWe of Emergency Power Generation Capacity. Scope includes PEECO Freedom iGear "Open Transition Paralleling Switchgear" and three Caterpillar model C32 Tier II diesel electric generator sets each rated 1,000KWe , 480/277 volt, 3-phase, 60Hz at 1800 RPM.

Problem

Due to facility expansion and an increase in critical life support load A. I. DuPont Children's Hospital was in desperate need to add 3,000 KWe of emergency back up power as quickly as possible. The system also had to comply with the State of Delaware's stringent emission standards.

Solution

PEECO and Trent Enterprises Hamilton, NJ., general contractor, convinced the hospital not to install an alternative proposal of two 2,000KWe Tier I generator sets. The two unit proposal exceeded present and future load projections and would require adding an expensive Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to the exhaust system. Instead PEECO proposed Caterpillar model C32 Tier II compliant generator sets rated 1,000 KW each along with PEECO's Freedom iGear with "Open Transition Paralleling" . The units operate in parallel at the ideal balance of load and operating efficiency. The Tier II certification complied with state emission standards eliminating the costly SCR exhaust scrubber system. PEECO ordered the generator sets in advance to save valuable time. The generator sets were already coming out of the factory when PEECO was completing the Freedom iGear. Trent Enterprises appreciated the timely coordination of the equipment which saved valuable installation time and cost on the project.

PEECO Equipment Scope

In phase 1 of the project Philadelphia Electrical Equipment Company (PEECO) provided its celebrated Freedom I gear in a purpose built climate controlled outdoor NEMA 3R walk-in enclosure. The Freedom iGear was "Open Transition Main-Tie-Main" design controlling two Caterpillar generator sets each rated 1,000 KWe, 480 volt installed in Sound Attenuated Walk-In Enclosures. The generator voltage was stepped up from 480 volt to 4,160 volt thru pad mounted transformers and connected to PEECO's Freedom iGear for control and distribution. Within a year period after commissioning Phase 1 PEECO added a third 1,000 KWe generator set along with matching paralleling switchgear for a total plant capacity of 3,000Kwe/3,750Kva.

PEECO Experience

PEECO's ability to assess problems and act on them is as strong as its engineering experience. "PEECO has the relationships and understands where the market is in the power generation industry. PEECO can answer the challenge of large capacity, critical schedule's and complex control systems better than anyone in the industry" stated Len Wenger Vice President of Sales. "Our experience gives us the confidence to turn what others think are complicated, intricate projects into positive solutions.

Result:

The Alfred I. DuPont Children Hospital emergency power system project was recognized for "Project Excellence" in November of 2008 by the Southeast Pennsylvania Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors Annual Merit Construction Award.
